Rivers State House of Assembly · 1999–2007

The lawmaker who chose the courts over compromise.

Elected to the Assembly after challenging irregularities in the result and being declared the rightful winner, he rose to Speaker at 34 — the youngest ever — and served two full terms. As Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, he became the most senior legislative voice after the Senate President and the Speaker of the National Assembly.

From a state under curfew to a state that worked.

He inherited a Rivers State under a dusk-to-dawn curfew, with power cuts, cult violence and collapsing schools. He left it with 700 megawatts of generation, a security architecture other states came to study, hundreds of new schools, 890km of roads, and tens of thousands of new jobs.

He did not inherit a rail sector. He rebuilt one.

Nigeria's railways had been left to rust for decades. Amaechi ran the portfolio like a control room rather than a ceremonial office — mixed teams of technocrats and operators, weekly reviews, milestones tracked in public. Three standard gauge lines were delivered under one administration, a first for Nigeria.

Executive office is one test. Being chosen by your peers to lead them is another. Amaechi has been elected to chair the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chosen to chair the Conference of Speakers, and led two national presidential campaigns — defeating an incumbent President for the first time in the history of Nigeria. He also polled as the runner-up in two presidential primaries.
